We had the best trip to San Francisco this past weekend! My older brother and his wife live there so we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to have some locals show us around and do some grown up things like eat out and have uninterrupted conversation without the kids around. My mom was so nice to fly down and stay with the girls for 5 days so we could get away. The girls loved every second of it and I don't think they missed us at all, which made the trip even more enjoyable.
On the plane! I don't think we've flown without the kids since they were born.
I looooved it. Like, I seriously enjoyed my flight. The flight attendants always say "enjoy your flight!" and I'm always like "riiiiight" but it turns out you can actually have an enjoyable flight if you don't travel with children!
Bryce and Jessie didn't get off work until the evening so we had to take the BART to their apartment and we just hung out and walked around looking for a place to eat for lunch. We scored with these tacos. They were so good!
That night Bryce and Jessie took us to a sushi place by their house. I think the place only sat like 12 people total, but it was super cool because you could watch the chef make the sushi.
Everything was amazing!!
Group pic! We love hanging out with these guys. They are so fun.
Friday morning we went to work with Bryce at Google. His office is right by the Bay Bridge. We got to eat Google breakfast and let me tell you, it's as good as they say. So much healthy, fresh, delicious food. I don't know how they get all their produce to be perfectly ripe, but it was, and everything I tasted was delicious.
Bryce's office space. Tyler trying out the massage chair.
We had Friday to ourselves so we did some touristy stuff like drive the windiest road! (Lombard st)
It was so fun we did it twice!
After that we drove the Golden Gate bridge and went up to take some touristy pictures.
We hiked around the backside of the mountain too and there were some pretty views there. We tried to go out onto the lighthouse on the end of that peninsula, but it was closed.
Found some WWII bomb shelters. (or something)
Down by the lighthouse.
We found a black sand beach.
After the beach we went to Fisherman's Warf. We sent some pictures to the kids so they knew we were thinking about them. (no Kendall plates)
The perfect gift for Tyler.
We got some Lobster chowder and fish and chips on the Warf.
Super tasty. And I loved that we could just sit and talk. It was such a relaxing, slow-paced day even though we walked 8 miles according to the iphone.
Fishing boats.
Heading up to Ghirardelli Square.
Pretty rainbow.
Brownie Sunday in the Ghirardelli chocolate shop.
Give me all the chocolate...
Walking back from the Square.
We had the best day with just the two of us. I'm glad we got a little alone time on the trip. I love hanging out with this guy!
Friday night my other sister-in-law flew in to hang out with us too. My little brother Kent is living with Bryce and Jessie for a couple months while he does an internship in SF. We all went to Burma Love to try some Burmese food. Everything was amazing! It really helps going to restaurants with people who know what to order. I love that it was family style serving so I got to try a little bit of everything.
On our way home we ran into an anti-Trump march.
(This was inauguration day)
A night walk by Dolores Park. The skyline is beautiful.
Breakfast!! This is french toast. So, so good!!
We got so lucky the whole weekend. Everywhere they took us Bryce and Jessie were saying it was probably going to be an hour wait and we never had to wait anywhere! We also got super lucky with the weather. It was supposed to be a super rainy weekend and it did rain off and on the whole time, but never enough to interrupt our plans. It usually rained while we were inside somewhere and stopped the minute we were ready to head out.
Pics at Baker Beach. GG bridge in the background.
We came over here to check out Jessie's view at work at the VA.
Tyler's photobomb of Kent and Kenzie makes me laugh every time.
The whole gang.
We went to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA).
This is a red square.... aka "art".
Another march. This one was a pro-life march. I think we saw 4 marches while we were there. It was a big political weekend.
Chinese for lunch! These soup dumpling were amazing.
Tartine bakery for breakfast. yummmm
Dolores Park in the day. Super pretty.
On Sunday we took the BART up to Danville to visit the Larsens (our friends from when my family lived in Prague). The Larsens put together a huge feast for us. It was so fun to catch up with everyone.
3 Engstrom kids, 1 Larsen, and 1 Davis + spouses.
Each family had 4 kids. We were quite the spectacle touring around Europe together.
Our sleeping arrangements in Bryce and Jessie's apartment. It was cozy.
On our way home Tyler helped someone who collapsed in the airport.
Good job, Dr. Hedman!
We had such a good visit to SF and it felt so good to get away for a while. We love our girls, but it was also nice to have a break from them! I'm definitely going to plan regular Tyler and Chandra getaways in the future! But even though our visit was awesome and it was fun to get to experience the city life for a bit, I am definitely a suburbia girl. It feels good to be home!

That looks like So So much fun!!! Wow what a great time! It reminds me when we lived at Stanford and made that visit. What a treat without kids seems romantic!!!

Looks like so much fun! I am so jealous of the brownie sundae you got and the Ghirardelli shop looks awesome. Glad you guys got a little break from the kids.
It's all about the food isn't it?! Ha!
The pics are great of everything you were able to see!
I'm SO glad it worked out for you to go and enjoy some days together as a couple and with great company.
I'm glad it worked out that I could stay with the girls.
