Welcome to Galveston

The time has come.
As of today we have been living in Galveston, Texas for exactly one week. I'm not much of a blogger, but decided that once we moved to Galveston I would start blogging because a) now we live in a more exciting place than Provo, Utah and b) I've become quite the blog-stalker recently and now feel like I need to contribute to world of blogging. I'm not much of a writer, but I will do my best not to bore people. If anything, at least y'all can look at the pretty pictures. (I'm becoming Texan already!)

To kick off this whole blog thing I thought I would share a few pictures from our first day here on the island of Galveston. And for those of you who don't know where Galveston is, I provided a picture for you.

We arrived here last Wednesday in the middle of the baking hot afternoon and it was a huge shock getting out of the car. We had driven all 1100 miles from Denver in the comfort of our air conditioned car and climbing out into the muggy air in Galveston, my first thought was, "I will never have straight hair again." (Side note: I did straighten my hair one day this past week and it stayed pretty straight, despite the humidity. Hallelujah!) Anyway, the first thing we did was check into our apt, which means signing your name about 1836848 times, and then we came back from the office and laid on the floor of our new place with the A/C on full blast. After a while we decided we should bring in our stuff from the car and as we were going down to get it we ran into the Sister Missionaries, who, fortunately for us, had 4 hours of service time they hadn't used that week so they helped carry our stuff up to our apt. Thanks missionaries! They were great and we promised to have them over for dinner as soon as we bought a kitchen table (still pending).

We soon got bored with unpacking and decided to find something to eat for dinner and explore the island a little. Overall, the island is a little rundown. I think because of hurricane Ike that destroyed the place in 2007. The nice places are the hotels near the beach and on the west side where they have grocery stores and shops.  I've noticed the more I go to new places that a lot of the stores are pretty nice on the inside, but they look rundown from the outside. One nice thing about living on an island is that it's pretty hard to get lost. If I'm ever unsure about where I am, I just drive toward the ocean and get my bearings again. Also, the street system is set up pretty good. N/S streets are numbered and E/W streets are letters (Ave A-Z, actually I don't think it gets to Z, maybe just T??) This is way TMI so I'll get back on topic, but the island is pretty small and we've had fun exploring.

We ate at the familiar Cici's Pizza for our first night and then went for a walk on the beach. Finally, some  pictures!

This is Tyler out on a pier with Galveston behind him.
On the pier.
The water is so warm!!
And that concludes our first day in Galveston! Stay tuned, more posts to come.....

I want to say that I, indeed, did make the first comment on this blog. It went something like: "I'm so excited for you both! And so jealous you will be living so close to the beach!"

Strange that it never appeared... you will have to take my word for it! I'm looking forward to hearing more in the future!
